Opportunities & Barriers
Day 2: 4 September
The aim of this session is to share experiences and exchange knowledge around the journey to commercialisation of energy storage technologies. During the session, discussion will highlight the challenges of technological development from the fundamental stage to high Technology Readiness Levels. Stakeholders from industry, academia and policy will provide different perspectives on the reality of the process.
The expert panel will consist of:
- Nick Herbert (Policy Lead for Energy Storage, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy)
- Jim Cardwell (Head of Trading and Innovation, Northern Powergrid)

- What evidence do investors need to see to invest in storage?
- What are the actual and perceived policy barriers for storage deployment?
- Are there already existing opportunities that haven’t been adequately explored?
- What is the actual value of storage in providing network flexibility and what is the role of network operators in facilitating commercial deployment?
- How can digitalization help with commercial deployment of storage?
- What is the role of storage in whole energy systems?
- What are the social and environmental implications of storage commercialisation?
The aim of this session is to contribute towards a short discussion paper around the session and points discussed which will be made available for download on the conference website and will contribute to the shaping of further activities of the new Supergen Energy Storage Network+.
