Newcastle, The City
Newcastle is the cosmopolitan capital of the North East. Famous for its welcoming character, with the University at the heart of the city, it's a great place to live and work.
History
Newcastle was named after the Norman castle in its centre. However, the city can trace its history back to Roman times. Remnants of Hadrian's Wall exist alongside a medieval cathedral, and impressive Victorian buildings.
Newcastle lies at the heart of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, renowned for its glorious unspoilt countryside and rich heritage. The region is at the northern limit of the Roman Empire and has been the location of many border battles with Scotland.
Shopping
Newcastle is great for shopping with around 600 shops in the city centre.
Quayside
The Quayside is a cultural hub bringing together the best of Newcastle and Gateshead. The Sage Gateshead music centre and the BALTIC art gallery share the river with many bars, cafes and restaurants.

Pub
Very nice traditional pub with a roof terrace, filled with Newcastle United memorabilia. Decent pub grub offered although limited choices for vegetarians. Walking distance from the USB
The Earl of Pitt Street
Pub
Modern dining room and independent pub with a relaxed, traditional atmosphere. Very very nice food (venue of the Geomatics Xmas Meal 2017), slightly higher end pricewise. Just round the corner from the venue
The Botanist
Cocktail bar
A good place for a few cocktails and some great views over monumnet and grey street. Good quality food too.
Gateshead Millennium Bridge
Sights
Modern tilt bridge offering great views up the Tyne at all the iconic bridges.
Fat Hippo Underground
Burger restaurant
Argubly the best place in town to grab a burger, from traditional beef burgers to some wild variations. Also offers wings.
The Gate
Food/Entertainment
With a range of different eateries (including ZaZaBazzar, a world buffet) and entertainments (including a cinema, nightclub and casino), there is plenty to do in The Gate.

An independent cinema showing everything from hit films to old classics and independent films in a grade 2 listed building.
Pitcher and Piano

A nice bar, but the location is even better, right on the quayside with views up the river towards the many bridges which are iconic to Newcastle.

If you fancy a dance, probably the best place to go (in our humble opinion) and a must on a night out in Newcastle. On the odd ocasion you might even spot the odd university professor.
Eldon Square
Shopping Centre
Located in the city centre, you can't miss Eldon Square. Home to over 100 shops from local stores to large national chains. Also has a large selection of food outlets, including Thai and Italian amoungst others.

Great pizza and you build your own from the base up. Reasonably priced and fast service.
The Carriage
Vegan Pub
Old style railway pub with real atmosphere and real ales, plus friendly staff and quirky rooms as well as an adjacent riding carriage. Very nice vegan "fish" and chips.
The Ouseburn
Pubs (area of)
A great spot to enjoy a few drinks especially on a sunny day with plenty of outside space and a great selection of pubs which also serve food.
Great North Museum
Museum
On the main university campus and home to a range of displays the museum's exhibitions vary from hadrian's wall to the Egyptians. Free entry.
Leazes Park
Park
Located behind St James' Park and a 2 minute walk from the USB somewhere to grab some fresh air on one of Newcastle's frequent sunny days.
Zapatista
Burrito Bar
A local chain started in Newcastle serving great burritos with plenty of choice and a chance for those who think they can handle hot food to test themselves. Conveniently located opposite the station if in need of something for the train home.
The Baltic
Museum (art)
A modern art museum right on the quayside where the views from the viewing gallery are often better then the art (in some peoples opinion). Free to enter, only downside is it's on the Gateshead side of the river....

A independent cafe specializing in tea. A local favourite for many and often open late for film showings and other events.

Bowling, table tennis, crazy golf and other games all available. Drinks and food also available.
The Stand
Comedy club
Comedy club with nightly shows. On some occasions one of the #gisruk2019 committee members even get a show. Any guesses?

A locally run restaurant which is always a popular choice for a curry. Can get rather busy and isn't the largest of places.

A nice pub with a large selection of drinks, though probably one of the more expensive in Newcastle.
Sinners
Club
No student has ever studied at Newcastle and not been here. Home to cheap trebbles and the cage. Some would say one visit to here is more than enough, you have been warned.
Castle Keep
History
On the site of the fortress which gave Newcastle its name, this shows a small bit of Newcastle's rich history.
