Talk Abstract

Gaelic Games is the largest sport in Ireland. In recent years more of the young men who play Gaelic Games have attempted to make the transition to the AFL in Australia. Within this overarching transition there are many sub-transitions at play including; amateur to professional, cultural and switching sports. In order to discover more about these transitions athletes how attempted the transition were interviewed about their experiences. From this, three major themes were discovered, motivators, stressor and adapting factors. The interplay between these factors plays a huge role in the success of an athlete’s transition.

In this talk we will discuss these findings and discuss how they could be used in order to help GAA athletes make the successful transition to the AFL.
