Irene Brown is an artist who has lived and worked in Newcastle upon Tyne for over 20 years. She is currently Subject Leader in Fine Art at Newcastle University.
Irene’s is concerned with site-specific projects both in the public realm through large-scale permanently sited public sculpture and as temporary gallery based installations. Irene specialises in the production of keynote artworks in areas undergoing regeneration and development in both urban and rural environments. Each site elicits a specific response and works are produced using a variety of media ranging from the use of new digital photographic techniques to the traditional materials of steel, stone and bronze. Conceptual concerns centre on ‘vanitas’ and the use of metaphorical symbolism to explore themes relating to time, life and death, myth and belief.
