Professor Janusz Bialek

Professor Janusz Bialek (FIEEE) is Professor of Power and Energy Systems at Newcastle University, previously having held Chair positions at the University of Edinburgh (2003-2009) and Durham University (2009-2014). In 2014-2019 he was Full professor and Director of Center for Energy Systems in Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) - dubbed “Russian MIT”.

Janusz’s background is in power systems but he has closely collaborated with economists, mathematicians and social scientists. His main research interest is in application of advanced mathematical methods to address techno-economic problems of sustainable power supply. He has published widely on technical and economic integration of renewable generation in power systems, smart grids, power system dynamics, preventing electricity blackouts and power markets.

Janusz has been PI and CoI of a number of major research grants funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Electrical Power Research Insititute (EPRI, USA), Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science and a consultant to the UK government, International Energy Agency, European Commission, Scottish Government, and a number of power companies.
