Dr Max Stone is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Newcastle University and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. His work sits at the intersection of applied sport psychology, psychophysiology, and performance environments, with a particular focus on how athletes prepare for competition.
Max’s research examines the psychology of pre-competition training environments—including tapering, warm-ups, and recovery behaviours—and how these processes shape athletes’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioural readiness. He also has a growing interest in exploring heart rate variability biofeedback as a tool to enhance performance and recovery for both athletes and coaches. His applied and pragmatic approach is reflected in collaborations with organisations such as Swim Wales, Sport Wales, Newcastle Swim Team, Newcastle Eagles, and Newcastle University Rowing Club.
Max contributes extensively to postgraduate teaching on the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology programme at Newcastle University, teaching across modules such as Social and Interpersonal Processes in Sport and Exercise Psychology, Advanced Research Methods for Applied Psychology B, and Psychological Techniques in Sport and Exercise. Alongside this, he also supervises doctoral research on topics including psychophysiological recovery, perfectionism, self-compassion, and disordered eating in athletes.
