Workshop

As part of DiPVaC 2, Ashley Hesson (Michigan State University) and Heike Pichler (Newcastle University) are organising a workshop entitled "Exploring novel impact pathways in variationist research: Discourse variation in healthcare settings." As part of this workshop, we present the results of our variationist analysis of the use of I DON'T KNOW in child counselling sessions with the aims of: (1) demonstrating how insights gained from discourse variation research about the formal and positional variability of I DON'T KNOW can guide counsellors' correct interpretation of the construction's use, and impact their ability to offer effective therapeutic interventions; and (2) initiating a discussion about novel impact pathways in variationist research that will expand the audience for discourse variation research.
