We are proud to host the IBRO Advanced School incorporating the theme Dementia, Mental Health and Brain Ageing in Africa.  This IBRO school as been made possible by generous contributions in form of educational grants from the IBRO African Region Committee, Alzheimer’s Association USA, Western University, Ontario, Creyos and Gtec Canada and Newcastle University, UK.  

 

Programme:w

This advanced IBRO School will address the pathophysiology of neuronal, glial and microvascular cells and neurodegenerative disorders which cause disability and dementia. Lecture content also includes brain clearance pathways and blood-brain barrier function.   Each day a new topic under the general theme of neurodegeneration will be presented including pathophysiology and neuropathology of common dementias, movement disorders, mental health including depressive illness and current therapies.  The curriculum will also feature clinical cases and experimental models.  There will be special sessions on cognitive tools and neuropsychological assessment, research ethics, history of notable neuroscientists, survival skills including writing abstracts, manuscript.  The students/trainees are expected to present posters and make oral presentations.  As time allows, we will also discuss how to recognise the features that are important in diagnostic neurodegenerative pathology using digital records.  Current draft programme is available at this link.

Abstract submission:  If you are applying to participate in the IBRO School as student/trainee you are required to submit an abstract.  Please follow the instructions carefully.  We will only accept research already completed or published.  Any abstract for a proposed project(s) or ongoing work lacking data is not eligible.  Once the quality of the abstract is accepted we will contact you for your CV and recommendation letter. 

We encourage submission of abstracts on topics to accord with session themes.  All students/ trainees will deliver (10 min) oral presentations based on the contents of their accepted abstracts.  They will also prepare posters, which will be displayed throughout the school.

School Programme and Abstract Book:  We are requesting abstracts (250-300 words; title, authors, text) from all the instructors too to formulate an abstract book.  The book will be available for all students/trainees selected to participate in the school.  We expect all those oral and poster presenters who agree, their abstracts will be published in the book.

Accommodation Booking:  Once your application is accepted the Secretariat will advise on how the accommodation will be organised at the venue hotel.  Please indicate on the registration form your expected arrival and departure days.
