Dr Shirley Coleman

Dr. Shirley Coleman is Technical Director and Principal Statistician, Industrial Statistics Research Unit in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University. She holds a PhD in Statistics and Computer Graphics, an MSc in Statistics and a BSc in Mathematics and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She is a Chartered Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society, a Chartered Scientist and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute.

Shirley’s vocation is the application of mathematics and statistics in all walks of life. Having a broad interest has led to unbroken employment with a wide variety of occupations including Marine College lecturer, senior engineer in British Gas, senior quantitative analyst in Baring Securities Hong Kong, principal investigator and senior lecturer in Newcastle University. By choice she has been employed part time for the majority of her career balancing work with family life. She has published many academic papers, supervised Master’s and PhD students and written books on data analytics in business and industry.

Shirley has extensive international recognition being an invited speaker at many conferences and events in the European Network of Business and Industrial Statistics, national Statistical Societies and the Statistics Teaching community. She leads European projects and Innovate UK funded Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, most recently with data rich companies in utilities, shipping, assistive technology, social housing and catalogue sales of auto parts.
