Electrochemical engineering and bioelectrochemistry
Alain Bergel is senior researcher at the Institute for Engineering and Systems Sciences of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS-INSIS) working at the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering in Toulouse (France). After his academic background in chemical engineering, his research interests have focused on bioelectrochemical interfaces and the related applications. His research work has continuously evolved towards more and more complex systems, starting from biosensors and electro-enzymatic reactors to microbial corrosion and microbial electrochemical processes.
He played a pioneering role in the field of microbial electrochemical processes, taking out a patent on the use of electroactive biofilms in fuel cells in 2002, heading the first European project on electroactive biofilms (EA-Biofilms, FP7, 2005) and organising the first European workshop on the topic (November 2008).
He has co-authored 14 patents and more than 130 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, of which around 60 are devoted to microbial electrochemical processes.
