Project leader is interviewed by Japan's public broadcaster about Satoyama art

Menelaos Gkartzios, project leader of ‘Contemporary Arts in Rural Development’ was interviewed by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK World about art situated in the landscape of Satoyama. The TV programme aimed to introduce the city and wider region of Tokamachi in Niigata Prefecture, famous for its Koshihikari rice, snow capped mountains and art installations amidst rich Satoyama. The interview took place while the research team was visiting the ‘Tunnel of Light’ art installation by MAD Architects, as part of last year’s Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. Menelaos introduced the comparative ambition of the research project across the UK and Japan on the contribution of artworks to local rural development, and the interdisciplinary strengths of the team. The interview is due for broadcast in Japan on 1 July 2019 – we hope in English!
