‘The PhD as a Springboard to Commercial Success: Applying Academic Research Practices to a Career in Market Research’

 

Dr John Gibson leads higher education market research in the UK and globally for Marketwise Strategies, a leading research and consultancy business in Newcastle. He has developed a very successful career focusing heavily on HE markets, from undergraduate and post-graduate to short courses, CPD, executive education and knowledge transfer. His market research experience ranges from university governance and internal communications, to student recruitment, portfolio development, campus development, and commercial spin-outs.

            John is no stranger to making transitions, having first studied History (First Class Honours), before switching to social science as a postgraduate, completing a Masters in International Studies (Distinction) and a PhD that explored the politics of global civil society. Prior to joining Marketwise Strategies in 2008, John held post-doctoral roles at Newcastle University – as an ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow – and in the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics.
