Title: Bias in, Bias Out: The Case for Protected Characteristics in Data
Abstract: Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this talk speaks directly to software engineers and educators, we’ll explore what it means to build technology and education systems that not only avoid harm but actively promote justice. This is a call to reframe how we think about data — not just as a technical asset, but as a tool for equity.
Bio: Laura is a lecturer in Computer Science. Focusing on investigations into inclusivity and bias in Computer Science Education which is coupled with work responsibilities on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Laura is also the current Director of Culture and Inclusion for the SAgE faculty.
Laura’s research interests are within Computing Education Practices, in particular developing inclusive practices for CS assessment and the CS culture. Laura is also interested in accessibility of tool design, AI technologies and whether this can impact a learner’s experience.
