Traveling to Newcastle
By air: There are budget flights to Newcastle Airport (NCL) from a number of major European cities. Other lowcost airlines land at Stansted, from which you can continue by train to Newcsastle, see www.thetrainline.com for times and prices.
Flights from Stansted to Newcastle with the budget airline EasyJet are available, but care should be taken to allow enough time (at least two hours) to collect luggage and check in again at Stansted, as it is not usually possible to check baggage through. Even then there is the danger that the first flight will be delayed and it is not usually possible to rebook the onward connection.
It is sometimes cheaper to fly to Newcastle from other parts of the UK than to travel by train (particularly cross-country). Full details of all these flights are available from www.skyscanner.net
By rail: Newcastle-upon-Tyne central station is on the London to Glasgow route served by National Express and cross-country routes are served by Virgin Trains.. Trains leave from London King’s Cross at approximately half-hourly intervals throughout the day from 6:15am until 9:00pm and the journey time is three to three and a half hours. Cheaper fares, starting at £12 are available if you are able to purchase in advance and commit to travelling on a particular train. Advance purchase tickets can be booked online at www.thetrainline.com and paid for by credit card. Tickets can then be collected at the departure station using a transaction code and the credit card used to pay for them for identification.
Railcards can be purchased by anyone in full-time education or under the age of 26. These can be bought over the counter, cost £20 (30€) and entitle the holder to 1/3 off all rail travel in the UK for a year. You will need a passport, driving licence, ISIC card or birth certificate as proof of age, a passport photograph, and a letter from your university or college confirming your student status (if you are over 25).
