Professor Christian Nijhuis

The Nijhuis group is interested in nano-scale electronic devices. They exploit non-conventional fabrication techniques to produce structures with unique properties to advance fundamental understanding and to improve the performance of devices. Their research mainly focuses on studies of the mechanisms of charge transport at the nano-scale which are important to understand for applications ranging from energy storage, green energy, to device miniaturization. They are mainly investigating charge transport at the molecular scale and use self-assembled monolayers layers of molecules of exactly one molecule thick that form spontaneously on gold and silver surfaces for instance sandwiched between two metal electrodes as model systems. Other research topics involve the manipulation of light at the nanoscale in the form of plasmons, and the use of graphene to enhance the performance of existing devices
