Travelling to Newcastle University

By air

Newcastle Airport is about 8 miles outside Newcastle, and so it's feasible to take a taxi. There's a taxi rank just outside the main airport entrance. Ask for the Armstrong Building opposite the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Queen Victoria Road. When you get out, there will be a grand red-brick pile in front of you - the Armstrong Building (see photo). The Bedson Building, one of the buidings where SS15 is based, is the next building to the right (see photo). To the left is the Percy Building, where on-site registration will be held (see photo). Alternatively, there is an efficient and reasonably priced metro train service (see below).

By train

Newcastle railway station is in the middle of town and not far from the university, but walking to it is not entirely straightforward, so the metro is recommended. The entrance to the metro is inside the station, just to the right of the main exit. Buy a ticket for Haymarket.

From the metro (Haymarket)...

At the top of the escalator, exit straight ahead and turn right. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. The university is in front of you (see photo). Go right along Haymarket past Blackwell's Bookshop, and left at the coffee house on the corner (see photo) onto King's Walk, then straight ahead up some steps. The Student Union is now on your left (see photo). Continue straight ahead over a road and through a pseudo-Gothic double arch ('the arches') . At the top of the quad (see photo) is the Percy Building, where on-site registration will be held (see photo).

Accessibility Route from metro (Haymarket)...

From the platform take the lift to ground level, exit right and turn right. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. The university is in front of you (see photo). Go right a short distance along past the railings, and turn left at the corner (see photo). Continue up the slight incline (see photo) to the top. Turn right here at the ballroom corner (see photo). Continue straight along until you are opposite the arches (see photo). Cross the road and go through the arches into the quad, where there is a slope on the right hand side (see photo). The Percy Building is straight ahead of you at the top of the quad (see photo). However, half way up the quad, you will need to turn right (see photo) and then left (see photo) to avoid the steps. You are now in front of the Percy Building where on-site registration will be held (see photo).

By car

Parking in the university and surrounding area is generally difficult. However, SS15 is outside term-time so the University parking will be open to the public at a charge of £4 per day.

Travelling north on the A1, pass the Chester-le-Street exit, up a long uphill stretch past a large motorway service area. About half a mile beyond that the road forks: go left on the A1, signposted Newcastle / Gateshead. Down an incline, and exit A167 Gateshead South. Follow the A167 straight through Gateshead for about 2 miles until you reach a complicated intersection with numerous traffic lights (on the Gateshead stretch, beware several hidden speed cameras). Go straight through all these intersections and over the Tyne Bridge. On the Newcastle side, continue on the A167 through an underpass, and follow A167 Jedburgh / Morpeth for about 3/4 mile to a left exit marked City Centre (North). Take that exit, go right at the first set of lights, and almost immediately thereafter left into the university reception. Ask the porter there about visitor parking and how to get to the Percy or Bedson Building.

If you are travelling south from Scotland, navigate to the A167 and follow the well-directed signs to Newcastle University.
