We are pleased to announce the Third Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. We invite postgraduate students to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations on ANY area of linguistics, theoretical or applied.

General Submission Guidelines

  • Electronic submissions only, please.
  • Your abstract must be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. In addition, you should make sure that your abstract conforms to the formatting guidelines below.
  • Please send two copies of your abstract file attached to your email. One copy should be anonymous (title and abstract only) and the other named abstract should contain the following identifying information: title of abstract; author's name; author's affiliation; along with the abstract text itself.
  • The filename of your anonymous abstract should be in the following format: surname_initial_anon (e.g. Smith_P_anon.doc). The filename of your named abstract should be in the following format: surname_initial_named (e.g. Smith_P_named.doc).
  • The email message to which you attach your abstract should contain the subject line: "abstract submission" (without quotes). The body of the email message should contain the following information: title of abstract; full name; affiliation; contact email address (if different from the address in the email header); contact telephone number; primary and secondary subfield of linguistics from the list below:

  • All abstracts are automatically considered for oral presentation. If you would prefer to present a poster instead, please indicate this in the body of the email you send.

Abstract Formatting Guidelines

Your abstract should be no more than 1 A4 page in length.

Please format the page as follows:

  • Line spacing: 1.5
  • All margins: 2.5cm
  • Text alignment: justified
  • Title text: Times New Roman, 14pt, bold, centred (NB. this includes name and affiliation on the named abstract file)
  • Body text: Times New Roman, 12pt
  • Paragraphs: don't indent; leave one clear line between paragraphs
  • References can be given on a second page but will not be included in the abstract booklet.
  • Please gloss any non-English examples used.

Abstract Review and Acceptance

All abstracts which conform to the above guidelines will be anonymously reviewed by two reviewers. Once the review process is complete, you will be notified by the organising committee if your abstract has been accepted for oral or poster presentation.

Accepted abstracts will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. There will be a dedicated poster session on the day of the conference, but posters will be on display all day.

Speakers will also be invited to submit their paper for publication in the Newcastle Working Papers in Linguistics.
