4 Student Bursaries now available [March 2 2009]

Thanks to our successful funding applications, including to the AHRC, we are able to offer four bursaries of up to £50 each. We have three bursaries for UK-based presenters and one bursary for an international presenter.
In order to apply for one of these bursaries you need to be presenting either a paper or a poster at the conference and be a postgraduate student. Please email the following details to pgconfling@ncl.ac.uk before Friday, 13th March 2009:
1. Your full name, affiliation and email address.
2. An estimate of the cost of your expenses to attend the conference, e.g. travel, accommodation etc.
3. If you have any other funding to cover these expenses, e.g. from your university.
4. A brief statement about why you should receive funding.

CHILDES Workshop [February 7 2009]

CHILDES workshop will take place on the 26th of March, in conjunction with the 4th Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. This workshop aims to provide practical, hands-on experience of the CHILDES database and its tools for researchers working in any field of language acquisition. Professor Zoltán Dörnyei

Zoltán Dörnyei is Professor in psycholinguistics at the University of Nottingham. His research interests include: individual differences and psychological aspects of second language acquisition; psychological processes in the second language classroom; and research methodology

Professor Anders Holmberg

Anders Holmberg is Professor in theoretical linguistics at Newcastle University. His research interests include: syntactic theory; comparative syntax; Scandinavian languages; and Finnish..

Registration fees are £15 before 15th March, 2009. Thereafter, registation fees are £20. There is also the option of the conference meal to Wokmania in The Gate, Newcastle city centre (also £15). If you would like to attend the conference meal, then please indicate this on the registration form.

We are pleased to announce the Fourth Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

We invite postgraduate students to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations on any area of linguistics, theoretical or applied (see below for abstract submission guidelines). 

This one-day conference is designed to give linguistics postgraduates from all research areas an opportunity to present and discuss their research in an informal and intellectually stimulating setting.

The conference takes place at Newcastle University on Friday 27th March, 2009, in the Percy Building, Newcastle University, with a conference dinner in the evening.

Professor Anders Holmberg (Newcastle University), and

Professor Zoltán Dörnyei (University of Nottingham) will be giving invited plenary lectures at this year’s conference.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Saturday 3rd January .

Notification of acceptance: early February, 2009

Pre-registration (for reduced rate): 1st March, 2009

Abstract Submission Guidelines

Abstract submission guidelines are available at conferences.ncl.ac.uk/pglinguistics. Abstracts should be sent to pgconfling@ncl.ac.uk. Email submissions only, please (Microsoft Word/PDF format only).

Presentation Guidelines

Accepted abstracts will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. There will be a dedicated poster session on the day of the conference. Speakers will also be invited to submit their paper for publication in the Newcastle Working Papers in Linguistics.
