Newcastle is located on the River Tyne in the North East of England, close to the rolling hills of Northumberland and the rugged coast of the North Sea. For many years renowned for its shipbuilding and coal mining industries, Newcastle is nowadays known better as the home of Newcastle United F.C. and the world famous Newcastle Brown Ale.

Getting to Newcastle

Travelling to Newcastle couldn't be easier. Newcastle International Airport can be reached from over 25 destinations worldwide and is only 25 minutes away from the city centre by Metro. The central railway station is served by services from London, Edinburgh, Manchester and numerous other UK destinations. More information can be found at the University's travel page.

The campus and city

The University campus, where many of the conference activities will take place, contains a vibrant mixture of traditional and modern buildings. Located in the north west of the city centre, the campus is only ten minutes from the official accommodation, city centre shops, bars and pubs. Accommodation

Situated in the heart of the city centre, The Albatross Hostel has been booked by the Organising Committee for those participating in IGSM 2011. The hostel is only ten minutes walk from the University campus and seconds away from many of the city centre shops, bars and pubs. It is also only minutes from the Central Station for Metro and mainline train services. More information on the accommodation can be found here.
