Conference Dinner EntertainmentThe Kathryn Tickell BandWe are finalising arrangements for the Kathryn Tickell Band to play a concert of traditional and original Northumbrian music after the conference dinner in Newcastle’s Assembly Rooms on Saturday 30 July 2005. It was irresistible for us to approach the band with a CD entitled ‘Debateable Lands’ (1999) and we’re delighted that Kathryn has agreed to come. Do not miss this – you will love it. (No, Northumbrian pipes are not the same as Highland bagpipes.) Kathryn Tickell comes from the North Tyne Valley where she learned to play the Northumbrian pipes and fiddle. She founded the Kathryn Tickell Band in 1990 with Peter Tickell (fiddle), Julian Sutton (melodeon) and Joss Clapp (bass guitar). The band plays modern interpretations of traditional Northumbrian and Border music, as well as compositions of Kathryn’s own. It has a growing national and international reputation and played at the Last Night of the Proms in 2001. "Britain’s Kathryn Tickell is a
genuine phenomenon. Not only is she a master of the Northumbrian pipes
– she’s an accomplished composer, arranger and bandleader
as well. Tickell bends the notoriously tricky little pipes to her will
on a program of traditional numbers and originals that gracefully honour
the tradition and boldly extend it into jazz, modern folk and chamber
music." For further information about the Kathryn Tickell Band see:
